Dutch Cinnamon Sugar Pancakes (Pannenkoeken)
Dutch pancakes, called pannenkoeken, are thin, large pancakes that are very popular in the Netherlands. They are different from American pancakes because they are bigger, thinner, and often served with simple toppings like cinnamon sugar.
Pannenkoeken have been part of Dutch food culture for hundreds of years. In the past, they were an easy and cheap meal for farmers because they used simple ingredients like flour, eggs, and milk. Families often cooked them for dinner, not just for breakfast.
In the Netherlands, there are special pancake restaurants called pannenkoekenhuizen. Some of them serve more than 100 different kinds of pancakes! One famous giant pancake made in the Netherlands was over 10 meters wide, created for a festival.
You can find great pannenkoeken all over the Netherlands, but some places are especially famous:
The Pancake Bakery – A very popular pancake house in the center of Amsterdam with many sweet and savory options.
Pannenkoekenhuis Upstairs – One of the smallest pancake restaurants in Europe, known for its cozy atmosphere.
Hans & Grietje Pannenkoekenhuis – A fun, fairy-tale themed place that families love.
