The Legend of Children of Lir

Long ago in Ireland, there was a king named Lir who had four children: Fionnuala, Aodh, Fiachra, and Conn. They were happy and loved each other very much. But their stepmother, Aoife, was jealous of them.

One day, Aoife used magic to turn the children into swans. She said they must live as swans for 900 years. They could still talk and sing, and their voices were so mesmerizing that people came from far away to listen.

After many years, the children heard the sound of church bells. A kind monk found them and helped break the spell. But as soon as they became human again, they were old and weak. They died soon after and were buried together.

The story of the Children of Lir is one of Ireland’s most famous legends. It is a sad but beautiful tale about love, loss, and time.
