The Legend of the Dullahan
The Dullahan is a supernatural rider, usually
depicted as a headless man on a black horse, carrying his severed head under one arm. Sometimes, he is said to ride a black
coach (Cóiste Bodhar) pulled by six black horses,
thundering through the night.
- His eyes glow in the dark, and he uses a whip.
- Wherever he stops riding, someone is destined to die.
- He does not speak, except to call out the name of the doomed person.
Origins and Influence
The Dullahan comes from ancient Celtic mythology and is thought to be a type of fairy or death spirit. His legend may have influenced later tales of headless horsemen in European folklore, such as Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
The Dullahan remains one of Ireland’s most terrifying and famous ghostly figures.
