The Hen Egg (1885) was the very first Fabergé egg, created for Tsar Alexander III as an Easter gift for his wife, Maria Feodorovna. It looked like a plain white egg, but inside, it held a golden yolk, a tiny gold hen, and a miniature replica of the Imperial Crown.
This design was inspired by an old Danish tradition, and Maria loved it so much that Fabergé was given complete artistic freedom. This first Easter egg started the famous tradition of Imperial Fabergé eggs, leading to more than 50 exquisite designs.
