The Problem with Plastic in the Ocean
Plastic pollution is a big problem for the ocean. Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter the sea. Plastic bags, bottles, and fishing nets float on the surface or sink to the bottom. Many sea animals eat plastic by mistake and can get sick or die.
The most polluted area is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is located between Hawaii and California and is full of plastic waste. The patch is very large—some say it is bigger than Germany or France. Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down.
Good news: people are working hard to clean up the ocean! Special boats and machines now collect plastic from the water. Some projects use long floating barriers to trap plastic. The collected waste is then taken to land and recycled. One large cleanup project focuses on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Since it started, thousands of kilograms of plastic have been removed.
