Plague Doctor: The Mask of Mystery and Fear
The Plague Doctor mask is one of the most recognizable Venetian masks, with its long, curved beak and round glass eye holes. It is often used at other events, such as steampunk festivals. Unlike other Carnival masks, it was originally designed for doctors during the plague to protect them from disease. They filled the beak with herbs, believing it would purify the air.
Over time, the mask became a symbol of mystery and fear. During Venice Carnival, it is now worn as part of elaborate costumes, often with a black cloak and wide-brimmed hat. Though once linked to illness, today it adds to the dramatic and mysterious atmosphere of the festival.
