With seconds to spare, Mei Ling escaped the tunnel and returned the statue to the altar. The temple filled with golden light, and the black lantern shattered into pieces. Villagers cheered as the Jade Dragon glowed, restoring the town’s fortune.
But when Mei Ling looked at the crowd, the old man who gave her the lantern was there. He smiled and said, “You’ve passed the test, Detective.” Before she could ask what he meant, he disappeared—leaving only a glowing red lantern.
